Savannah, GA (August 3,2011) - With 25,000 soldiers and their dependent families calling coastal Georgia home, over 20 percent of the population of Savannah and Liberty County consists of military personnel.

The close proximity to Hunter Army Airfield and Ft. Stewart makes us naturally inclined to help our military neighbors in times of need. No group has taken this idea more seriously than the supporters of The Landings Military Family Relief Fund (LMFRF).

Founded in 2007 by a group of Landings Red Cross volunteers, the LMFRF strives to raise funds to help soldiers and their families when unforeseen financial difficulties beyond their means arise. Military families routinely face financial challenges from unusual expenses and family emergencies. The LMFRF has become an important resource for those people whose sacrifices ensure our freedom.

In April of 2011, the group completed their 4th annual fund drive and to date has raised $650,000 from within the gates of The Landings.

“The fund provides invaluable assistance to our military family and in no small measure contributes greatly to our ability to wage this global war on terror,” said the former commander of the Third Infantry Division.

Funds raised by the LMFRF have helped over 1,850 individuals, a clear reflection of the dynamic spirit and generosity of Landings residents.

“We like to think that The Landings Military Family Relief Fund separates us from a distant America and keeps us on an intimate relationship with our military neighbors,” said Lou Molella, current chairman of the LMFRF.
