Southport, NC (July 28 2014) - The coastal community of St. James Plantation, near Southport NC, borders the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway where marsh creeks twist and weave through the 6,000 acre neighborhood. Residents here want a better environment – one rich with life: fish and oysters, crabs and birds, even fishermen!
To achieve that, an army of resident volunteers partnered up with The NC Coastal Federation, University of North Carolina – Wilmington (UNCW)and the Division of Marine Fisheries to build reefs….out of oyster shells!
Introducing The Oyster Reef Project — oysters aren’t just for dinner anymore! Just wait until you see how these wonderful creatures have helped clean our coastal waters and provide a research sanctuary for our local students.
